More About Nature’s Crossroads
Nature’s Crossroads was founded by two Hoosier farmers, Art Sherwood and Jeff Evard. Both have extensive growing experience and are very active with the local food movement. They are working to promote organic growing throughout the Midwest – on farms, in backyards, in frontyards, and even on rooftops. Nature’s Crossroads allows them to support organic gardeners by selling seeds and garden supplies through their internet store, select retail outlets, and a school fundraiser program. Their long-term goals include expanding the local seed supply, getting kids into the garden, and helping people become organic gardeners.
As farmers themselves, Art and Jeff are very excited about expanding the availability of locally grown seeds. They hope to help local farmers transition to organic seed production as a way to keep small family farms profitable. Nature’s Crossroads is preparing to launch a seed savers program working with farmers and gardeners around the Midwest who are interested in selling seeds. Building up a supply of locally grown seeds will benefit farmers by providing a new source of income and will also benefit gardeners by offering robust strains of vegetable and flower varieties that are well-adapted to the Midwest climate. Art and Jeff also hope to discover new “heirloom” varieties that have been created by backyard (or small farm) seed savers that can then be grown on a larger scale and offered to gardeners around the Midwest.
As parents, Art and Jeff are passionate about getting kids involved in gardening. Many children do not have the opportunity to learn about gardens at home and so Nature’s Crossroads is working to promote organic gardening through their school fundraiser program and their seed donation program. The school fundraisers include an educational component (this spring’s theme is “Insects in the Garden: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly”) to teach kids about the importance of locally grown food and fresh produce. The company also has created a variety of products to encourage children to garden including the “Magic Fairy Garden Kit,” the “Sunflower Fort Kit,” and the “Down and Dirty Garden Collection” (which features four packets of root vegetable seeds and a bar of soap). Gardening is fun for children of all ages and it’s a great way to get exercise and healthy food.
Everyone at Nature’s Crossroads is passionate about local growing and is committed to supporting organic gardeners around the Midwest. Gardening is a great activity but it can be intimidating for people who have never seen a kale plant in person. There are also many experienced gardeners who are accustomed to chemical-based gardening and are not sure how to go organic. With that in mind, Nature’s Crossroads has created the Midwest Gardening Guide, a series of articles sent weekly by e-mail to provide growing tips and gardening insights about how to grow organically. Each issue contains gardening tips for that week and a detailed hands-on project to try along with an explanation of the science behind the techniques. Sign up when you visit their website!
